Lo Que la Vida Me Robó: Spanglish Girl’s Recap & Review Dec 9-13

Lo Que la Vida Me Robó: Recap & Review for the week of December 9-13

Sadly, Friday’s episode was a recap. I along with many others on Twitter were very disappointed to say the least. Well, at least I got to use my regular novela viewing time to write this blog.

Ok, so Monday through Thursday the novela was mainly about Montserrat’s hate for Alejandro. If you missed any of the episodes, just know this much:  Montserrat hates Alejandro so much that he makes her want to throw up. Her exact words to him on several occasions were: “Me das asco!”

This week, we also realized that Alejandro and Montserrat’s marriage is all kinds of  dysfunctional–here’s why:

1) Alejandro basically forces Montserrat to consummate the marriage in a moment of rage and jealousy. On Twitter, Jorge @JustJorge_  asked: “So we’re just going to ignore that he straight up raped her? #LaVidaMeRobo” I have to admit, I was thinking the same thing….

2)  In another episode, Montserrat attempted to run away with the misguided help of María and Juventino. During her attempt to escape, Joventino almost assaults her. Alejandro arrives and saves her but then forces her to return with him. Um….I think this could be considered kidnapping or holding someone against their will (in the U.S. you go to jail for that!)–Yikes…

While I was watching this week, I kept thinking to myself: Montserrat could really benefit from a can of pepper spray—ok maybe two: One to fight off Alejandro and the other to use on Juventino.

This week, we also learned that María is not the nice girl we thought her to be and that Alejandro’s mom is alive.  José Luis also continues his search for Montserrat, and Refugio learns that Esmeralda was flirting with Dimitrio to gain information for José Luis, and not because she actually likes him.

Thursday’s episode was the pinnacle of this week’s episodes: After Montserrat’s failed escape, she learns from Alejandro that José Luis is dead–we of course know this isn’t true. Coincidentally, José Luis and Refugio come across a dead body that happens to be the Hacienda’s new capataz.  The capataz had with him a map to the Hacienda, which José Luis finds and this is where it ended! I was hoping that Friday we were going to be able to see José Luis and Montserrat reunite, but that didn’t happen.

So my main issue with the novela to this point is this: Because it’s based in the present time, it’s difficult not to be distracted and bothered by the fact that Montserrat doesn’t want to be married and that she is forbidden to leave.  In a historical context, like Amor Real, it would be considered “common” for that time;  that
being the case, I watch but I do so by having to remind myself  that it’ just  a novela.

Lastly, the novela is starting to get depressing: all the fighting between Montserrat and Alejandro is losing its sizzle and is starting to get down right sad.  I had hoped that Montserrat was starting to fall for Alejandro when she saw his interaction with the children from the village, but as we all know, it wasn’t enough—on Thursday she said he still gives her “asco!

I’m hoping that next week the storyline moves quicker. Although I’m team Jose Luis, Alejandro is starting to grow on me—it’s hard not to like him–he just soooo handsome!

Until next week,

Spanglish Girl

Here’s a fun note: Is anyone else seeing the comparisons between this novela and Beauty and the Beast? Montserrat like Bell  stays with Alejandro to save her father. Montserrat like Bell doesn’t eat the first few days when she arrives at the hacienda, and Alejandro like the Beast keeps Montserrat against her will. The only thing left is the talking/dancing dishes and furniture–if Montserrat keeps locking herself in her room she just might start to see crazy things…lol. I also happen to think that Alejandro looks like the human Beast and that Jose Luis looks like Gaston:
