Lo Que La Vida Me Robó: Spanglish Girl’s Recap and Review May 26-30

This week Montserrat and Alejandro reunited, but it wasn’t “happy ever after” from that point forward: first and foremost there is the matter of Jose Luis, aka Montserrat’s “husband”; then there is Pedro, Graciela, and Fabiola—all of whom would not benefit from Montserrat and Alejandro becoming a couple again.  But all of these individuals are the least of their worries because Alejandro still has to prove his innocence or face jail time for the charges he failed to address years ago.

The storyline also becomes even more complicated by Montserrat’s new realization that she might be pregnant.  Even more complicating is that she just shared a romantic evening with Alejandro. So aside from being unfaithful to Jose Luis, she may also be carrying Alejandro’s child; although, I doubt its Alejandro’s child because they literally just slept together hours before she became “dizzy”.

So let’s say Montserrat is pregnant with Jose Luis’s child, then what? I’m thinking she will still want to be with Alejandro.  Alejandro will have to be willing to accept that she is pregnant.  The real issue will be Jose Luis and his unwillingness to lose Montserrat—especially if she is carrying his child.

On Friday, Montserrat came very close to telling Jose Luis she plans to return with Alejandro—that was until Rosario overheard her and barged in to distract her. Jose Luis has no idea Montserrat knows that Alejandro is alive, let alone living in Agua Azul again and meeting with her. Rosario initiated the meeting between Alejandro and Montserrat this week. She asked Montserrat to accompany her to an event only to have her meet Alejandro in the church where they were married.

The scene in which Montserrat and Alejandro saw each other for the first time was not as magical or exciting as I thought it would be: Montserrat seemed shocked, but she also quickly became angry. She went off on Alejandro for not having made an attempt to contact her—she even told him, “it’s too late for us.” Alejandro only then told her that he had been in coma.

Knowing this, Montserrat declared her love for Alejandro and Alejandro received the reassurance he had been waiting for. Alejandro asked Montserrat if she loved Jose Luis, and she answered, “no.” She also admitted that she married Jose Luis out of gratitude, not love.

That same night Alejandro and Montserrat met at a hotel or motel and made love.  Alejandro asked her to meet him to prove that she is completely his. As fate would have it, Jose Luis sprained a toe and it kept Montserrat from meeting Alejandro at the scheduled time. When she finally did arrive it was 1 or 2 a.m., Alejandro had had already given up on seeing her for the night. He was just about to leave when, as fate would have it, she appeared, right as he opened the door to leave (#onlyinanovela).

I have to say that marrying for gratitude seems odd, but Montserrat has always been a little odd about her feelings. She seems to fall in and out of love rather quickly and often. Remember when there was a time when she claimed she would always love Jose Luis? I guess the difference is that Jose Luis was her “first love,” whereas Alejandro is the “love of her life.” I also can’t help but feel bad for Jose Luis: the way Montserrat and Rosario were sneaking around behind his back just seemed so wrong. However, in their defense, he chose to keep the truth about Alejandro from Montserrat, and for that reason, I don’t feel too bad for Jose Luis.

Now let’s talk about Josefina and Adolfo: is this a new love story? That kiss on the beach was pretty romantic. I think this relationship can only work if Adolfo finds a new career. I can’t see Josefina married to “El Alacran.” We don’t need another “Carlota,” and I’m not sure Josefina would be so naïve—she seems to have smartened up: the girl has a backbone now—es una mujer hecha y derecha.

Speaking of Carlota, I think the rose colored glasses have finally begun to come off. Maria’s visit ruffled Carlota’s feathers a bit, and the incident, although explained away by Ezequiel, didn’t sit well. Ironically, Graciela called it when she told Carlota that there is likely something between them. For once I’m going to say, “listen to Graciela”—she knows what she is talking about…

Aside from Graciela’s side hobby (meddling in other people’s lives), she now is meddling in a good way—well kind of.  She plans to help Fabiola, but in helping Fabiola, she is going to betray Montserrat. Leave it to Graciela to help one daughter and backstab another. Graciela is probably most concerned with the money she will lose from Jose Luis if Montserrat and Alejandro get back together. I don’t get why she doesn’t just tell Fabiola she is her mom. Knowing this information, perhaps Fabiola would be willing to give Graciela some money. In the end, isn’t that what Graciela wants, money? The fact that she is helping Fabiola may be an act of guilt, self-interest, or compassion—I can’t tell.

And Demetrio and Monica are back together and living under the same roof now. So I guess Josefina and Demetrio are officially over—I didn’t see this one. I really thought last week when Demetrio and Monica broke up that Josefina and Demetrio would somehow end up together. Maybe things are better this way. Some things are just too hard to forget: the way Demetrio treated Josefina maybe just that.

Last but not least, Maria is dancing again at the Escondida in hopes that Alejandro will look for her. Let’s just say she might be dancing for a long long long time. He hasn’t even mentioned Maria since his return, and I doubt he cares to look for her. I really hope Maria finds a new obsession; she is never going to get Alejandro.

The next big scene, that I’m sure we are all eagerly awaiting, is the moment that Jose Luis finds out about Alejandro and Montserrat. I can’t even begin to guess what he will do—he has become quite a hot head.

Until next week,
