Lo Que La Vida Me Robo: Spanglish Girl’s Recap and Reivew (July 28-August 1)

Episodes 175-179

So we are finally being told that the novela is in its final weeks. I don’t see how everything is going to come full circle.  It seems to me that although some people have been killed off (Maria and Ezequiel), we still have too many storylines that are not complete.

First, I’m not sure I believe Maria is dead. If the past is any indication of the future—she is still alive. Throughout this novela we always see the dead body if the person is really dead: Ezequiel also died this week and he actually looked dead–Maria, for all we know, was just asleep. I think it benefits Pedro to let her live.

So if you’re wondering how Ezequiel and Maria died, let me explain: Ezequiel ended up turning against the Navy to save himself from Pedro. What he didn’t count on was that Alejandro would save Jose Luis. So Ezequiel makes a deal with Pedro that if Ezequiel kills Jose Luis, Pedro will let Ezequiel live.  During a sting to locate and save Rosario, Ezequiel reveals his true plans to kill Jose Luis and he aims a gun at Jose Luis, but Alejandro reacts and shoots and kills Ezequiel instead.

So Yes, Alejandro saves Jose Luis.  The irony: a week ago they were in a fight to the death, now they are back to saving each other and helping each other. I guess that is good—violence is not the answer.

Even more surprising is that Maria does not kill Rosario as Pedro instructed her to.  Instead, she allows Rosario to live in hopes that Alejandro will thank her.  Alejandro, however, does not have an ounce of gratitude for Maria because just this week, Maria ambushed Montserrat and revealed to her that she had tried to kill her. When Alejandro doesn’t respond to Maria as she hoped,  Maria  decides to settle this who love triangle once and for all Juliette and Romeo style: she obtains a poison from Pedro and she poisons both herself and Alejandro (what a wackadoo).

Alejandro and Montserrat had headed to the Hacienda to spend a weekend alone. Maria, uninvited of course,  arrives and puts the poison in a pitcher of lemonade (it looked like lemonade to me).  Alejandro drinks the lemonade and then Maria reveals what she did and why (so they could be together, forever).  Alejandro walks out of the house to try to call for help, but Maria has sent everyone home. Montserrat is who knows where.

Alejandro collapses to the floor and  Maria soon follows. She drinks the lemonade and then lays next to him. Montserrat gets to the Hacienda in time to be able to speak with Maria. The poison seems to be taking it’s time with Maria because she is still able to explain what happened. Then, the shocker!

Pedro appears with a medicine to reverse the effects of the poison, but he only has enough for one person (of course!).  He forces Montserrat to make a deal with him that if he saves Alejandro, she will have to help him get back at Nadia and Victor. Montserrat at first hesitates, but then she realizes she has no choice: either she agrees or Alejandro dies.

Pedro has one of his men inject Alejandro with the lifesaving medication and Alejandro lives. Maria’s body is carried off and the last we hear of her is when Pedro sends Adolfo a box with a supposed body part of hers—we never actually see that it is her (I can’t believe she is really gone, she was such a pain and then in one scene she poisons herself and goes quietly).

Now for my thoughts on this storyline: I was seriously getting nervous that this was the end for Alejandro. I think we all did. I was so distraught I had to eat a cinnamon roll… I have to say that I have never been so happy to see Pedro. As much as I dislike him, he saved Alejandro’s life—at least for the time being. Now, if you are like me you are probably starting to feel very confused.

After all, why is Pedro sending all these people who don’t like him to do his dirty work? In the end, none of them have followed through. It is all part of a complicated web that I’m sure we will find out soon enough, but until then, it’s a little frustrating because everything is so confusing.  Even more confusing is who saved Pedro—we finally know…

So when Montserrat tells Nadia about the promise she made to Pedro, Nadia loses it and pretty much tells Montserrat off. I happen to think that Nadia is being selfish. Was it not Nadia who kept Alejandro’s life a secret because she did not want Pedro looking for her and Victor—never mind that Laurito Jr., at that time, had no parents.  Well anyway, Montserrat explains that she doesn’t intend to follow through, but that in the moment, it was her only choice.

Victor, after hearing Nadia lash out at Montserrat, disappears and to our surprise he ends up knowing where Pedro is hiding. Then we find out that he has known all along where to find Pedro because HE saved Pedro’s life…

So yes, It was Victor!!! I was stuned as I’m sure you all were. I could not believe that Victor saved Pedro, but yes, Victor did. And why? Well, he was hoping that by saving Pedro they would be even and Pedro would leave Nadia, Victoria, and him alone to live happily ever after.

Oh Victor, I think you allowed yourself to get played. Ask any of us viewers and we will tell you that Pedro is not to be trusted: his words mean nothing. The man has no honor. So this whole time I thought it was Maria who saved Pedro, but no, it was Victor.  And Pedro being the ungrateful monster that he is orders Victor to be killed by Adolfo, but Adolfo–of course–saves him.

Speaking of Adolfo, Victor realizes that Adolfo must be el Alacran because Pedro tells him that el Alacran is going to arrive to kill him.  Adolfo, however, convinces Victor that he is wrong. Victor does not seem convinced but that is where it leaves off.  Adolfo is already panicked because Ezequiel leaves a death letter that ends up in Dimitrio’s hands. Dimitrio has yet to read the letter, but Adolfo gets his hands on it and he finds out there is a second letter somewhere else (I think that is what happened).

On Friday’s episode the novela ends with Jose Luis kidnapping Romina. The last we see of the two is that they are at a posh hotel hanging low.  Montserrat is furious but there is little she can do. Dimitrio heads out to see if he can locate Jose Luis.

Now for my final thoughts: Jose Luis kidnapping Romina seems awful but if I saw all this craziness going on around my kids, I think I’d flee. We all know that Jose Luis is bound to return. I just don’t see the novela ending in a negative way. Although, the name of the novela makes me nervouse because it means what life took from me. I’m hoping that we are given a “years latter” scene at the end and they show everyone happy and in a comfortable life.

As for Adolfo, I just don’t see how his storyline can end well. I think Dimitrio and Josefina will end up together, but only after something happens to Adolfo or Josefina learns Adolfo’s real identity. I feel for Adolfo but I think in the end he said it best when he said he wanted money the easy way and that is how he ended up associating himself with Pedro (I think he said this Victor when Victor questioned his identity).

And let’s just assume Maria is gone for good, well then I’d have to say that-that was Karma at its best: what goes around comes around.

I think as part of the finale week I will come up with “Lessons Learned from Lo Que La Vida Me Robo.”

As of now, I have these:

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Arranged marriages are overrated.

Everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

Always lock your doors, even if you have maids.

Love is complicated.

Don’t drink beverages that have been sitting unattended.

Crazy people do exist.

Can you tell that this novela has made me somewhat paranoid…

Ok, until next week my Novela Lovers!

Spanglish Girl

PS. Esmerelda and Refugio are apparently back “together.” Who knew all it would take is for a Eric to kiss Virginia.  If you don’t know who Eric is, let me explain: Eric is the new street musician, who followed Esmerelda around, but now apparently has a dark passed and doesn’t want to reveal it to her, so he decides to push her away by  kissing Virginia.

Esmerelda see the “kiss” and I guess realizes she might as well be with Refugio. I kind of agree, she has already invested all these years into that relationship and I think in the end they love each other and sometimes that’s all there is holding two people together.

As for Virginia, why is that girl always chasing after men who don’t like her?  Ay yi yi ( I can’t find a definite answer for how you spell that).

To me the movie title really goes to Rosario because she lost a lot even though in the end she was happy. But lost a lot
